They don't usually mention that it sold terribly. They much rather make it sound like it was somewhat exclusive or something.
When I was a kid there was a copy of it in the biggest local supermarket. I remember it so well because it was the huge box with the included walkthrough and because it wasn't locked up in the glass cabinet with the other SNES games but rather sat on top of it. It sat there for three or so years, collecting dust. Nobody wanted it.

Maybe someone (aka parents) managed to refund an imported game somehow. Or the copy got lost in transportation.
I certainly hope somebody got fired for that blunder.

It was probably American.
As far as i know, Mystic Quest is the only jrpg which came out in Europe before the Playstation 1 era.
Many never came out after that either, like Valkyrie Profile, Xenosaga part 1 and 3 and Raidou vs King Abaddon

Probably. But Nintendo Europe is in Germany so if there were a place for a weird PAL Earthbound to have surfaced, that would be it.

I have an extreme deja vu as if we had this very exact same discussion before.
Anyway, I was around ten years old and thus really in no position to buy any SNES game for myself. They ran you around 120DM, that version with the walkthrough likely more. I got 20DM a month at that time, 5DM a week to buy a Mickey Mouse comic, a canned Cherry Coke and some sweets.
The only games I could save up for were Gameboy games with Club Nintendo discounts.
