I'm surprised this is the first time you hear about it, in Italy between the 80s and 90s there was a tv comedy show which was about riffing over footage of Takeshi's Castle and The Gaman.
I wasn't joking when i said that one time the prize for being left in a glass cage for days without food and water (in Paris i believe), and being woken up during the night by the host so you could watch him drinking and eating in front of you, was a leather jacket.
