Re: Diversity & Comics - I need picz in mah bookz
Say what you want about Ethan Van Sciver, but it's not unusual for his crowdfunding campaigns to go over a million dollars. He has a serious following and he knows how to keep a core group of them interested, even when he's super-late. He makes a lot of money for Indiegogo, but even if they decide to push him out, he can find other ways to do things. He's talked about it before on his livestreams, but hasn't yet felt the need to leave.
Losing his YouTube channel would be more devastating to him than losing Indiegogo.

Losing his YouTube channel would force him to actually deliver his Indiegogo pledges, and we can't have THAT!
Re: Diversity & Comics - I need picz in mah bookz
Pretty much. I don't think he has ever delivered on any of his pledges. Richard Meyer has even if late.

I'd never question his undisputed status as the Throat GOAT.
Other than that, I don't see why you think it's a badge of merit that he has a gullible following he exploits to a massive degree.
All he has to do is make one fucking comic, something he's been doing for a living on a monthly basis before.
You'd think the motivation would be high. But I guess sucking dick and Burger King are more important once you've pocketed a mil.

EVS explains his lateness as a combination of taking his time to do his best work and how running his own business (publishing, printing, shipping, consulting with toy makers, overseeing operations at his warehouse space, and, yes, livestreaming, which is a legit part of his business that keeps his audience engaged) eats up much of his time.
The first part is a matter of opinion, but the second part is relatable to anyone who's ever independently put out a physical media project. I've done it and everything about it is a pain in the ass.
I back Ethan's comics. I don't back the toys because I'm not into toy-collecting, but the comics are cool. EVS has delivered more than the "haters" will admit. At this point, you either accept the lateness or you don't. And if you don't, you no longer back him anyway.
I guess I'm gullible, but the livestreams have kept me interested. I don't watch them all, but I watch some of them each week and one thing that people miss about EVS's constant targeting of Eric July is that under the surface of critiquing July's missteps, Ethan also offers lots of wisdom about how the traditional comics industry has evolved. By extension, he's also talking about how all media has evolved and how that applies to this weird, undying, and generous cult of collectors who will fund a non-mainstream vision (whether it's comics or movies or music) as long the creator understands them. Eric July had that for a moment, but now he's squandering it, largely due to arrogance.
That's fascinating to me.

Did you need EVS to tell you that times change?Lindsay's Liver wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 2:11 pmI guess I'm gullible, but the livestreams have kept me interested. No, but there are nuances to it and someone like Ethan Van Sciver has unique insights into what's happening since he's been in the business for 30 years and is making it work for himself independently today.ebin namefag wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 2:31 pmDid you need EVS to tell you that times change?Lindsay's Liver wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 2:11 pmI guess I'm gullible, but the livestreams have kept me interested. Eric July will say that times have changed, too, but he's new to all of this (and yet thinks that he knows everything). He has no wisdom. He's too busy primping his own ego and throwing out motivational phrases ("Be great") to talk about reality.

The reality of comic books ia the following: nobody cares about them anymore. A single manga outsells them all combined. These people are grifting out of a dead corpse.

There's probably a market out there for non-woke comics with pulp settings, sword and sorcery, horror, the good kind of sci-fi and cyberpunk, maybe even western and noir.Le Redditeur wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2024 5:17 pmThe reality of comic books ia the following: nobody cares about them anymore.
