Science fiction and fantasy have always been joined at the hip, and the distinction becomes more and more meaningless depending upon subgenre. Is The Dying Earth fantasy? Is it science fiction? What is A Princess of Mars? Is it fantasy? Science-fiction? Sword and sorcery? Sword and planet? What the fuck even is "Sword and Planet" anyway. Nobody outside of grognards ever uses that term.

All this shit used to be published in the very same magazines. They used to be known as "weird tales" or pulp tales. Pulp Fiction, if you wish.

There is hard SF, of course. That subgenre I largely attribute to the work of Isaac Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke. But that didn't come along until later. Long before that genre and many others were born, it was all "weird adventure stories." 20,000 leagues under the sea and the time machine are stories about science and discovery, but they do not even pretend to be realistic, aka not fantastical.

Star Wars is the definition of space fantasy anyway. Nothing makes fucking sense in Star Wars scientifically. It's all magic.
