He does seem like he was genuinely happier when he had no pretensions of being anything other than a meathead. 2009-2011 is probably the closest he comes to being kind of pleasant.
It comes off like he feels put on, like when you put a sweater on a cat - I'd feel bad if he weren't an insufferable cunt.

He should embrace his life of involuntary celibacy, mount dew marinated chicken and his shit taste in movies everything.

But he has to be an intellectual because his worldview places them at the top of the power/desirability scale and his self-delusion tells him he belongs there.

He's never not had those pretensions. He's always fancied himself a serious film critic and intellectual, destined for greatness.

He's always had them but they have always been at odds with his actual personality and desires.

In an alternate universe where he did nothing but B-movies and Kaiju reviews he'd have made some modest success like the horror reviewers on TGWTG but would still end up languishing in obscurity like he is now because he isn't funny, he isn't informative, and would still think basic editing in Premiere Pro makes him hot shit. Even if he wasn't a pretentious cunt he'd still be lazy and boring.
