It isn't. Being in the approximate area of "a fire" is the most exciting and character-defining moments of his life. That's how empty this drone is of experiences.
Oh, and he watched Clerks.

I'm not even being hateful here. He's just very boring. There wasn't an original thought in his book, the ending was a whole lot of nothing just about anyone could've made more interesting and he was so caught up in referenced that he totally forgot world building altogether.

There's a total of four locations. The rental store, Ian and Stan's place, the shrink's officeand the Brian's place.
Which one of those are real? You don't know.

Of the characters, we only know Ian exists or existed and that he had a girlfriend, who he suffered a car accident with. What was the outcome? Who is Ian? You don't know.

Real House of Leafs kinda shit. Only in rhat book the author, as a self-insert tells you that no character actually exists and it's basically just performance art instead of a novel.

Bennet has absolutely nothing going on for himself. Take away his movie references and he's plain empty. His book therefore is just as hollow, to where "I saw the aftermath of a fire once" is the lot of the plot.
