Out of the Big 4 only Megadeth were doing anything good from the 2000s onwards and even they pumped out some duds like Thirteen. But even Megadeth don't hold a candle to some of the smaller bands that still had something to prove like the ones you mentioned, which is why a lot of there more modern stuff is on par with what they did in the 80s. The age excuse is bullshit for Metallica, especially fucking Lars since all the other 80s thrash drummers can still go despite hitting 60 like him. Fuck, Charlie Benante from Anthrax added shit like blast beats to live Anthrax performances that weren't in the original songs as he aged, Lars and the whole band have been coasting since the end of the Black Album tour.

The Big 4 haven't needed to do music for a long time being set for life financially while the others are doing it to survive and feed their families. That's why their music is better, it fucking needs to be.

I'll add another old thrash band in the mix (though they became more proggy over time) and that is Voivod. It sounds fucked to say this but Piggy dying and being replaced by Chewy was the best thing that ever happened to the band. 2000s Voivod was boring shit, but Chewy not only wrote a good comeback album in 2013 but expanded on the Voivod sound in the direction Nothingface was going it. He understands Voivod's music down to a science to the point where even the rest of the band doesn't understand as they just did things and the music sort of happened.

I felt that was about music in the 2000s since I got into 80s thrash metal in 2005 but other than that I took it for granted too. Political correctness was 1000% dead in the 2000s, at the time it wasn't a big deal but the 2010s made what felt like a nothing decade in the 2000s look like heaven with all this woke shit. Narcissistic rich kids didn't have control over all media like they do today.
