America does waste a ton of food, and that's a shame. But a dozen doughnuts thrown away isn't an example of massive food waste. What wastes food is when massive quantities are thrown out because the stores couldn't sell them all before date, and would rather throw it out than give away old food (probably for liability reasons).

Failing restaurants also create a ton of food waste, by hoarding piles of food that they won't be able to move. Only for it all to go bad or get freezerburnt.

Those always just go in the trash. Food banks don't take baked goods. Old bread is often used to feed horses and pigs. Vegetables got to pigs as well or bunny farms. Fruit, again pigs or birds.

The amount of food we actually threw into the trash was miniscule. People that bemoan "all the food" going into the garbage don't know jack shit. They don't realize that trash costs money. Not just because that's stuff you paid for but also having the dumpster emptied. It's much cheaper to have what can still be used get collected by various organisations and local farmers.

All that actually lands in the can is truly rotten stuff or dumb shit like deep fried sugar dough. Our food trash per week would fit into a suitcase.

I was not allowed to sell stuff past the best before date. Food banks are.
What's another matter entirely is if something was called back for some reason. That absolutely had to get destroyed. 90% of the time the reason was "deviations from the specification", what ever that means.
