If he didn't do it, Jim's audience would disappear, or at least half of it would. I remember when he became Mister Metokur and had Haberman as his avatar, he said the whole "I'll do the usual, close my account, set another one up and assholes like me will find me like usual" but due to gamergate a whole slew of normals flooded in and basically tried to be his audience but were also willing to spend all their cash on him. It's also around that time when the archive channel of his exploded in numbers and subscribers.
