It's very much a watch guy's brand. Even people that usually wear 10k+ mechanical watches will tell you to get a G-Shock as a "beater" watch. If one wants a cheap but durable watch I'd recommend everyone a DW-5600E, which can be had for $44 and if you don't want to bother about a battery for the next fifteen+ years or setting the time about once a month the GW-M5610 for $84 has Tough Solar and Multiband 6.
Both can last one a lifetime. Replacement bezels, straps and batteries are dirt cheap and the actual case and module will outlive you.
I like Casio because they found a niche that makes sense. If you're going to have a quartz movement, take advantage of it!
Nobody wanted a Rolex Oisterquartz for a good reason. You're having an electrical movement, put a chip in the watch and give it functions that'd be very complicated and expensive for a mechanical watch. Also abuse the fact that it's a much tougher movement! You won't have the prestige of a luxury watch but you can outdo them in practicality.
Alarm, countdown timer with an alarm, world timer, perpetual calendar and chronograph all in one doesn't even exist in the mechanical world! Anything that has more than two of those functions is prohibitely expensive and sure as hell can't take a beating on top.
