Re: The Metal thread
Their later material is probably easier to get into, I guess.
Moonspell abandoned their black metal roots pretty early, which is a shame or not depending on who you ask.
I used to think this song was the coolest shit ever when I was 13 or something
It still has some pretty fucking kickass moments, tho.
4:30 serious Castlevania shit right there, mate

Re: The Metal thread
There's very little Black Metal I like. Mostly it's stuff where people argue if it's actually Black Metal like this:
Which to me is much closer to Death Metal, really. Especially when you hear the re-recorded version of it with the first singer of the band:
I like the older version better, though.
I also like this:
Bonus points for one of the best Metal band names ever.

I'm afraid I might have accidentally meme'd KK Downing into his current predicament.

Re: The Metal thread
When the Firepower tour was announced it was announced that Andy Sneap of all people (yea I know he was the producer) was going to be playing with Priest live as a result of Glenn Tipton getting Parkinsons. Being that I have a heaping helping of "original members or GTFO"tism, I thought that was beyond dumb and thought they should just ask KK to come back. Of course this was all fantasy seeing as the reason KK left in the first place was he was tired of Glenn and Jayne Andrews shitty management. That hadn't exactly changed in the past 7 years, so it stands to reason that why the fuck would they call KK back? Nonetheless, a few punters and I engaged in the "muh original members" tism circle jerk on metal archives when all of a sudden KK makes some announcement saying that he was "devastated they didn't ask him to come back."
KK's autobiography is out now, and while I haven't bought it yet, I thumbed through a few pages at B&N last night, where he made it pretty clear what I stated above. Now blabbermouth is running a fucking story on him complaining about something new every single goddamn day (not his fault, and he actually called them out on it in an interview) and my fucking God is it depressing.
The only mistake he made was acting shocked they didn't ask him to come back, which I think I might have memed him into doing by accident.

Can Andy Sneap even play the cool-ass shit from Painkiller? I highly doubt that.

Can someone suggest a death metal band that isn't pretentious try-hard, avant-garde garbage?

Re: The Metal thread
Bolt Thrower
Hail of Bullets
Amon Amarth
The Crown
Jungle Rot
Easy shit to get into. "Death Metal", as silly as it may sound, is a fairly broad genre. You have Technical Death Metal, Melodic Death Metal (Amon Amarth kinda falls in that category) and then you've got Metalcore that's not too far away from all of that.
And stuff like Deathcore that's even less far away.
Max props to both of those band being German, then singer of Maroon being fash as fuck and the singer from Neaera having insane range.
But for regular Death Metal, Bolt Thrower is pretty much where it's at:
Hail of Bullets for more modern shit:
Honorable mention for Asphyx's Deathhammer because it's baller as fuck:
Amon Amarth for more melodic stuff:
I actually get goosebumps from this one. The melody, the lyrics, everything. This one touches me on a deeply emotional basis no popshit could ever reach.
Jungle Rot is pretty much great overall:
The Crown goes back however far you want, really. Old Death?
New Death?
They have got you covered.

Re: The Metal thread
There's also Deicide:
Morbid Angel:
and of course, arguably the album that started it all, Scream Bloody Gore:
It also doesn't get more meat and potatoes than Obituary:
Then of course there is Swedish death metal. My personal favorites are Dismember and Necrophobic:
