SMW is an amazing platformer, with top notch controls and cool level design - but the cape/flying Yoshi end downgrading the challenge factor. It's my onew complaint about it.

To be honest, something that's always put Super Mario World over Super Mario Bros. 3 for me is a simple one of convenience: Super Mario World saves, Super Mario Bros. 3 doesn't.
Mind you, Super Mario World's saving feature does leave some to be desired (having to always go back to one of the ghost houses in order to save rather than being able to do so anywhere, resetting the number of lives you have when you come back) but the ability to actually play some, turn the game off, and then not have all your progress be reset is a really big upgrade.

In any case, I'm not fond of World's revisiting earlier levels. I understand that for the entire branching paths concept to work you need to be able to do it, but there's also nothing stopping you from going back to an easier level and spamming all the 1-ups and Power-ups that you need, which you can't do in SMB3.
I disagree almost completely. I'm not fond of the cape. The cape controls are awkward, you can't change direction, you still have to build up momentum to fly and past a certain height you can no longer ascend, you automatically go into flight mode. It's true that you can completely fly over a level, but you could do that with the P-Wing so the only real advantage I see with the cape over the Raccoon tail is that you can descend really quickly while flying and slam into shit.rabidtictac wrote: ↑Wed Jul 04, 2018 4:46 pmThey deepened the tanuki suit gameplay by changing it to a cape where you can manipulate your movement in the air. You ultimately have a lot more freedom and can get a lot more use out of the cape than just spamming the jump button over and over. You can do entire levels without touching the ground if you know how to fly with the cape.
You could do most of this stuff in SMB3. Hammer suit will kill pretty much anything. Tanooki suit allows you to turn into stone and become temporarily invincible (and kill pretty much anything). P-Wing allows you to fly over entire levels. You can take them all into the dungeons which you can't do with Yoshis. The only advantage I see to blue Yoshi over the P-Wing is that his power is reusable.rabidtictac wrote: ↑Wed Jul 04, 2018 4:46 pmThe yoshis added more gameplay depth in ways we talked about. Red yoshi was pretty bad but the others were good. Yellow could kill a lot of things with its stomps that were otherwise hard to kill. You could steamroll enemies with it easily. Blue let you skip entire levels. Even at a basic level, getting a yoshi gave you an extra hit and you kept that extra hit no matter how many times Yoshi was hit, as long as you got back on him. So you were permanently at 2 hits all the time even when small. Yoshi's jump counted as a spin jump for the purposes of jumping off spiky enemies too. And the dismount jump gave you a super high jump for skipping chunks of levels or finding secrets.
As for the extra hits, it's just another way that Nintendo have casualised the Mario series, culminating in the 'We'll just play it for you' that we've been seeing in the most recent entries.

The game beating itself for you is completely optional. I think it's fine to be in a kid's game.

Bob's a fat idiot, let's get back to talking about vidya
I still think it's dumb that it's even in there
The games didn't beat themselves when we were kids. If the game beats itself, what the fuck is the point of it?
