It's completely true, they even tried to hire the artist. But they copied it as the original Borderlands looked almost identical to RAGE, so ironically didn't want to be accused of ripping it off.

I don't know if the Rage part is true, since they've only shown that look once when they revealed the game, but it's possible - after all, seeing one cool video on MTV (at least I think Codehunters were made with MTV money) likely wouldn't be enough to convince them to drastically change the look of their game. To be fair, it wasn't so drastic, just a shitty filter over the graphics, but still. It's sad that with 4 games they still didn't get even close to Ben Hibon's original creation (which also reminds me of Gorillaz art style).

It's not surprising that this isn't more well known however, because reaction from lot of the gamers was to this revelation was "I don't think it's that similar...". You know, since lot of them are complete morons.

Thing is, Borderlands is 3 entire games. That clip is how long, again? There are hundreds of hours of content in just Borderlands 2. Borderlands 2 has 4 campaign DLCs plus the main campaign, 4 headhunter packs, UVHM into OP levels 1-8, Digistruct Peak... I don't think any of that shit is in the video.

I don't see it as a super big deal. They stole it wholesale, sure, but most big companies do that. They certainly expanded upon the ideas in that video, because no way did that video have thousands of hours of total ideas packed into it. That's why I don't think it's some huge secret that would destroy Gearbox if people found out. A lot of people who know about Gearbox know about that video. It's sort of like showing off a drawing of a dude who looks exactly like Kenshiro from a 1-volume spanish comic book called Apocalypse Fight Man, which was created 5 years before Hokuto no Ken came about.

I've mentioned 4, because they are working on BL3 and have shown some tech demos - however, the amount of content in those games is not the point, using the style for new game that didn't have any franchise behind it is.

Sure, it's nothing compared to other shit Gearbox has done, and it sure isn't the main reason why those games got popular to begin with, but it's rather embarrasing because of how blatant it is. Lovecraft has been long dead, so we are talking about creative bankrupcy, but stealing behind someone's back (after you've tried to hire him) just so you can create a shittier version of his vision is just scummy. I don't call everything a theft, it heavily depends on what the person who's stealing does with the result. If it's good, I might not care at all.

It really is interesting how everyone is fine with wholesale gameplay ripoffs, suddenly every brawler is Akrham, Kart racers are all just kart. FPS constantly copy each other...

Yet if someone has some cool looking visuals everyone gets all mad. Even though if they don't copy a cool art style 80% of the time the games all look the same anyway!

Wait i'm confused, nearly everyone else i heard speaking about Borderlands 2 said it was bad in pratically everyway and not just the writing, like the looting system was broken for one example

I probably have 1000x the gameplay time in Borderlands 2 of every poster on this forum. The gun parts system is cool and every manufacturer having a gimmick makes the shooting actually feel different from weapon to weapon. A Jacobs Gatling Gun vs a Torgue Spitter vs a Hyperion Thinking actually feel unique and interesting.
