JUST ONE OF THE GUYS (1985)
One of my nostalgia faves. Saw this on cable TV a billion times in the 80s and I still think it's one of the funniest teen movies of its time. A high school girl enrolls in a different school where she poses as a boy because she thinks her journalism teacher is a sexist who won't take her seriously. In a twist that I don't know would be done today, she turns out to be WRONG. She gets the same criticisms for her work as a boy that she got as a girl. She's a bad writer who becomes good only after the life lessons she picks up on her gender-bender adventure.

In the Blu-ray commentary track, the director (Lisa Gottlieb) remarks briefly that this movie has been embraced by troons. If so, the only thing I can see that they get from it is the fantasy of actually PASSING as the opposite sex and being considered attractive. The lead actress, Joyce Hyser, is a pretty girl who becomes a slick, stylish "boy" and manages to attract a young Sherilyn Fenn. She doesn't look like a monster like most troons.

Otherwise, the themes of the movie aren't about questioning your sexual identity at all. Our lead girl is never comfortable as a boy. It's not something she wants to do forever.

There's nothing preachy here. It's good raunchy fun. I'm glad it hasn't been remade because today's Hollywood would ruin it completely,

They will remake it. And it will be about her sexual identity and little else.

Saw Snack Shack from last year, shot on location in Nebraska City, with a liiittle bit in Omaha.

Its about these two kids who run schemes, like winning money betting on horse races, and they're able to brew beer at one of the kid's houses. The kid, Moose, played by Gabriel LaBelle, who played Lorne Michaels in the SNL movie from last year and young Steven Spielberg in The Fabelmans, plays Moose like a live action version of Eddy from Ed, Edd and Eddy, and I thought that was amusing.

Anyway they get forced to get summer jobs because the parents get pissed about the beer scheme, and they win custody of a little concessions shack by the local pool.

The movie is often funny, I laughed frequently. I like how it portrays how cringey these kids are without drawing too much attention to the fact that their cringey, because the characters are all supposed to be like Freshmen in High School, so cringey is the right note to hit. I'm not immune to "I KNOW WHAT THAT IS" style dopamine hits, I CLAPPED WHEN I SAW IT when I saw my local zoo in the movie.

There's familiar stuff, main guy develops a crush on the banging hot cousin of the girl next door. Balances the cringeyness of these kids with enough of a lack in self awareness where it doesn't become grating and meta, and spends a lot of time on shenanigans! Shenanigans are always good. Pretty good movie, which was nice because stuff that gets shot here is fucking awful 99% of the time.

DHI is proof you can be both a massive homosexual and a virgin. They're not exclusive. If you display both in large enough quantities you can qualify for mod status.

RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II (1985)

Haven't seen this since I was maybe 12 years old. One of my libtard friends and I recently talked about FIRST BLOOD, the first Rambo movie, and we both agreed that it's great. Then my Kamala voter buddy threw in something like "Too bad that the sequels turned Rambo into a white man's fantasy of killing lots of brown people" and I say that is UNFAIR. Rambo doesn't kill a single brown person in this movie.

He kills lots of yellow people. And about 150 Russians.

Still I can understand why today's liberal wouldn't care for this movie, with its message that government is inept and corrupt and it's up to the lone patriotic individual to get things done even if he needs to break the rules.

I can also understand why ANYONE wouldn't like this movie because it's pretty stupid. Sylvester Stallone shoots, stabs, blows up, and puts arrows through the skull of legions of foreign soldiers all by himself in one absurd moment after another. Lucky for him, all of the enemies have no idea how to aim a gun.

Me though, I thought it was entertaining as hell.

My problem with Rambo 2 is exactly that they took a movie which was incredibly smart and built a sequel off it that is incredibly dumb. Rambo 1 is a tight thriller about a man pushed too far and placed in an unfair situation. Rambo 2 is a guy holding an LMG one-handed mowing down identical extras.

I agree 1000%. It's the "eighties"-ness of the sequel that appeals to me. Even better, it's an unfashionable side of the eighties, which is the muscle dude action movies. We rented all of those when I was kid and I still find them fun.

Guilty pleasure favorite from this genre is STEELE JUSTICE.
