I'm trying to get through all those "classic" horror movies I've never seen.

I watched the first two "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" movies. It's actually kind of scary because the pod people remind me of my friends that have fallen to the woke mind virus. I feel like the 1956 version has aged better that the 1978 one. Because my God, the 70s one is so fucking ugly. Ugly hair, ugly clothes. People have gross 70s occupations like mud spa proprietors and self-help authors.

On RLMs recommendation, I watched Re-Animator and From Beyond. Both were great. Jeffrey Combs is always fun.

I'm not really sure what is left. I guess Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Isn't that just torture porn though?

There's some Vietnam themes, and the backstory of how the Sawyers became cannibals is really interesting although Hooper focuses more on that in Massacre 2

TCM is pretty good. It was shocking for its time but nothing one would call torture porn today. it actually has a plot and acting.

TCM’s more grainy, which I like. I associate torture porn with lame digital shit. TCM feels real the whole way through.

Yeah, any “torture” is how fucking psycho the family acts. It’s not gruesome or even really violent. The dinner scene is like Alice in Wonderland’s tea party with lunatics.

I think the first TCM is much closer to a proper horror film than torture porn. It has setup, characters and payoff. It isn't just brutality for the sake of brutality. You're bang-on about it being shocking for its time but I think anybody who watches horror films to any degree has seen worse by now. Hell, The Thing is a seminal science fiction horror film which basically every science fiction fan has seen, even if they're not horror movie fans... And I remember the gore in The Thing shocked me much more (at the time) than TCM.

The political subtext in American 1950s sci-fi/horror movies is interesting stuff. Aliens from outer space are often metaphors for communists and their plan sometimes is to infiltrate everyday normal life by disguising themselves as humans, often in picture-perfect small towns. ("Invaders from Mars", "I Married a Monster From Outer Space"). There's also a common thread of people being aware of threats, but no one believes them ("The Blob", "It Came from Outer Space").

And I've always liked how two of the most loved sci-fi films of 1951 have diametrically opposed messages. In "The Day the Earth Stood Still", the aliens that land are good, the military are closed-minded assholes who just want to blow up something, and the scientists are the only ones listening. Meanwhile, in the original "The Thing", the alien is a threat, the scientists have little regard for human life, and the military are the heroes.

And I'll be 15th person here to say that "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is definitely not torture porn. It's great.

The Thing is like DHI, a bunch of celibate men hanging out in a remote outpost burning women and trannies anything alien.
