There's some interesting stuff in Part II about Michael Corleone destroying his own father's legacy, but it's entombed in three hours of nonsense about the Cuban Revolution. It doesn't feel as immediate as the New York families all closing in on the Corleones like you had in the first film.

It was a very clunky attempt to tie in the real life Batista-Mafia connection with the Corleone story. The Boardwalk Empire rushed the same plot point in their final season, but I think they did it better.

Probably because the flashbacks are still based on the original novel, while the rest was written by Mario Puzzo specifically for the movies, so they don't feel out of place (ironically, since they're flashbacks).

It doesn't work here because 1) if this is trying to be a canon prequel to the 90's Dalmatians it can't work because there will to be two Anitas, so it's either one or the other. 2) you re-arrange ginger and you get...

Ah, that makes sense. The flashbacks just plain fit better with the feel of the first movie.

I wouldn't go as far as to say that 2 and 3 are terrible (3 is borderline in parts) but it is a significant decline.
