Karen Knox, a special education teacher in Bedford, was among them. She lost power during the crisis but still owes some $7,000 to Griddy, an electricity provider located in Houston.
Oh, Karen.
But the arrangement produced eye-popping costs for some during the storm — topping $17,000 for a man Dallas television station WFAA spoke to —
"We cannot allow someone to exploit a market when they were the ones responsible for the dire consequences in the first place,” said state Rep. Brooks Landgraf, R-Odessa.
To recap, utility companies didn't bother winterizing their facilities after being ordered to a decade ago, causing pipes delivering natural gas to freeze and said facilities to shut down. But it's my fault somehow.
Kaiba White, an energy policy specialist with consumer advocacy group Public Citizen, said the costs would be passed on to customers one way or another.
“If they [the electric provider] don’t have a mechanism that allows them to do that in the immediate — like on the next bill or the next several billth — it’ll end up getting rolled into the overall cost of service,” she said. “It’s just a matter of whether it’s going to get passed on in an immediate way, in a shocking way … or spread out over time.”
Governor's making vague statements about doing something, but he's a RINO ass who might as well be a Dem.
I'm not an expert on the power situation (I'm on a fixed rate plan and am doing fine), but everyone I'm seeing who are getting these giant billth went with Griddy.
I did a search in my neighborhood Facebook group and a few people there were spamming for Griddy pretty hard in 2018. Paying wholesale prices for power is amazing! "Wish I'd done it sooner!" Then in summer of 2019, people who bought into that started getting $900 electric billth and knew they fucked up. After that, there's no mention of them at all again until last week's winter storm.
Over 30cm of fucking snow. Holy shit. I can't even think about shovelling. I'll have to spend another twenty bucks to get my driveway plowed. I was doing so good keeping my driveway shovelled and saving money but we're getting pelted every week since the new year.
