It's so weird that Alien has become Ridley Scott's despite him essentially being a journeyman hired to direct the first one. He didn't write it or have anything to do with the sequels but somehow he's now the Alien godfather.

It's his only claim to nostalgia fame. Unless you also like Blade Runner for some reason.

Those are his movies, though, as he came up with the idea and convinced the studio to let him make them; then there's always behind the scenes of him sitting there dictating the story to the writers. He was literally hired on Alien to point the camera and make it look kewl.

That making it look kewl is like 90% of the movie. Most directors don't write or even conceive of the movie. However, Scott boarded it, he cast it, he oversaw the production design and the costume design, he filmed it and he made all the stylistic choices that made the film so effective. He's not a director for hire in the way you're suggesting, like (I suppose) Irvin Kershner on Empire Strikes Back, or any of the MCU directors.
