Eh.....surpass? Don't agree. Shatner is Trek's equivalent of Harrison Ford. He didn't become nearly as big a star as Ford, and he'll always be Captain Kirk, but he didn't get as typecast as everyone else did in Trek (TJ Hooker). Honestly it could be argued that Ford never quite escaped Han Solo, as it's the role he's most known for.
