Tropa de Elite (2007)
Oyoyoyoyyyy! One of the most "right wing" movies I've seen in a long time. Two police officers in Brazilian police want to make a change in the corruption-ridden system of the local police force. One of them is a "good-hearted" fool, other is an intelligent, but gullible and fledgling idealist. And then there's this elite force unit commander who doesn't shy from torturing and murdering criminals and he wants to retire and make one of these two guys his successor.
This is one of those rare films that say what's what. Your bullshit ideology doesn't matter at all, it's might what is right. In the end it comes at the survival of the fittest, there's no room for act of moralizing, if you're not strong and you're feckless, you're fucked. I loved how in the end the idealist Matias realised he can't be friends with his reality-escapist university cuck friends and he abandoned all his gullible BS-ideologies and became a ruthless killing machine who in the end shoots a guys head off with a 12 gauge, not for serving law, but for personal revenge. Awesome film. 10/10

When passing through the Valley of Humiliation, slaves and dastards, exposing their sores, sob aloud for consolation and sympathy.
Re: Movie Thread
I like the sequel as well, not so good as the first one and more focused in politician and police corruption than the first one.

The HUE police has long since had it with pretending to be able to reform violent criminals.

Was watching The Lighthouse and realized widescreen shit sucks. The square ratio looks better, is easier to follow too.

Our vision is not square, but I've heard that the old 4:3 ratio is closer to human vision that the 16:9 and wider ratios we get now.Guest wrote: ↑Mon Jun 29, 2020 10:12 amWas watching The Lighthouse and realized widescreen shit sucks. The square ratio looks better, is easier to follow too.

Re: Movie Thread
But nobody likes black bars apparently. Plus I really hate how they ruin the picture by zooming in on original broadcasted 4:3 ratio shows, mostly cartoons.
Hell the tapes I have happen to manage to fill the screen without having to zoom in.

I went through the era where faggots cried about black bars on their widescreen DVDs, so tuff shit zoomers. 4:3 ratio is back, baby!

"A Ghost Story", from 3 or 4 years ago is another good modern movie that uses a square aspect ratio.
Widescreen needs a big screen. I like it, but I have a 65" TV. The first movies that I think of when I think of widescreen done really well are "Once Upon a Time in the West" and "Blue Velvet" and the original "Halloween".

Re: Movie Thread
Ultimately, how an aspect ratio is used is what matters. Carpenter's Halloween is a great example of how to effectively use a wide aspect ratio (Carpenter uses wide open spaces to emphasize Michael's lurking presence and how he is potentially around every corner), and The Lighthouse is a great example of how to effectively use a square aspect ratio (Eggers uses very tight framing and confined spaces to emphasize how isolated the protagonists are).
What sucks is when corporate idiots fuck with an aspect ratio to conform to the latest trend. For decades, wide aspect ratios were routinely fucked with to fill 4:3 televisions, and now, every once in a while, some streaming service fucks up square aspect ratios to fill 16:9 televisions.
