Hong Kong Cinema/Martial Arts Films: Big Fight in Little Corona
Re: Hong Kong Cinema/Martial Arts Films: Big Fight in Little Corona
The Protector 2 is a must watch just because it's so bad, like made-in-nigeria bad.
I guess Jackie's too old to do real martial arts anymore, so it's this weird MMA shit, but why are his movies so miserable? The last two Police Stories were just mean, spiteful little shits where everyone dies and he mopes around like an angry drunk.

Jackie Chan's Forbidden Kingdom is one of the absolute worst movies I've seen in my life. Not martial arts movies. Movies. The plot is fanfiction at the most fanboyish. I can respect the ambition of those old kung fu movies, where everything doesn't always look perfect but the attempt is made to tell a period story about chinese history. I can't respect crassly shoving in a shitty burger lead character (an otaku, too) to try to sell more copies to roundeyes. If you want to see two famous kung-fu film legends fight, watch Hero with Donnie Yen, Michelle Yeoh and Jet Li. Forbidden Kingdom is shameful.

I disagree with him needing time to mature, I saw all his movies in a dirt cheap DVD Box (that didn't have Enter The Dragon, but I had that already) and over time you can see him get better. Part of that was because the first two movies weren't written by him, the latter ones had him show his personality more and even a bit of humour in Way of the Dragon. In that one he is pretty much Goku where he has genius fighting IQ but a retarded goof otherwise.rabidtictac wrote: ↑Fri Apr 10, 2020 5:13 amI don't watch Bruce Lee movies except for Enter the Dragon. I already know that's far and away his best. He was a phenomenal martial artist and athlete, but he needed more time to mature and that was sadly denied him.
Enter The Dragon was all the kinks ironed out. I don't think he would have made something significantly better than that but he would have made way more movies just as good or only slightly better. Game Of Death would have been one of them, the imagery of him fighting Karem Abdul Jabbar is still iconic even though the movie was never finished. The 80s would have seen him exit his prime a bit like Arnie and Stallone did in the 90s.

According to his latest biography he was a dope smoking hippie obsessed with making a terrible esoteric martial arts porno starring James Coburn. He was also a bully who would have likely gotten shot by one of his former students.

Replace otaku with dindu, and you have the Rush Hour movies.rabidtictac wrote: ↑Fri Apr 10, 2020 5:45 amI can't respect crassly shoving in a shitty burger lead character (an otaku, too) to try to sell more copies to roundeyes.

Honestly, I've heard every Bruce Lee story there is and none of them match up in any sort of way. He died too young and so everyone thought they could make a buck off of his name. Growing up in the 80s near Seattle where Bruce's grave is, every kid's karate teacher had some story about how he totally kicked Bruce Lee's ass this one time.Guest wrote: ↑Fri Apr 10, 2020 7:29 amAccording to his latest biography he was a dope smoking hippie obsessed with making a terrible esoteric martial arts porno starring James Coburn. Time to show my bad taste again.
Probably too much special effects to be legit, but this is stylish af.
Ong-bak is arguably better, but I love the way this scene is filmed.

But not as classic as this piece of excellent fight choreography.

Not only is the weapon semi-concealed, but it's some exotic three-section staff. He could probably argue that he's just delivering some farming tool, or some part of a plow.rabidtictac wrote: ↑Fri Apr 10, 2020 3:12 amSome of the period films like 36th Chamber are somewhat believable as well, since peasants and monks weren't supposed to walk around with massive weapons of war. That said, San Te uses a weapon in that film's finale, but carries it semi-concealed in a shoulder bag.
