Acktshooally, when they ported Serious Sam to console (original xbawks,) they put the two games together into one game, which was called Serious Sam. So it's understandable folks might be confused and think they were the same game, or two "episodes" of the same game.

I didn't actually know about the console port. All I know is that "The First Encounter" is a title retroactively given to Serious Sam. The Second Encounter is practically something like Doom 2 where the first game was so popular they just quickly made a second game with the same engine and everything that they could just quickly hammer out. The only difference is that they didn't call it Serious Sam 2 and instead gave the third game the number 2.
Or in other words, The Second Encounter has too much content to be called a Stand Alone Expansion but is too similar to get the next number - at least Croteam thought so.

What happens when they actually switch to a newer engine can be seen with the HD removes of 1st and 2nd Encounter: They had to remove/adjust shit because the fancy gravity physics of the old engine were gone.
