Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)

Oh shit, Tarantino, oyoyoyy! Muh nigga! I postponed watching this because I didn't really think it was going to be anything more than a regular post-2000 Tarantino craziness, chock-full of references to other films, entertaining per se, always interesting, but in the end the whole being weaker than the sum of its parts. I skipped watching it in the theater as I wasn't in the mood for three hours of another Django/Inglourious Basterds, but I was wrong.

First of all, a current year movie without any current year shit in it, the fact that is always worthy of mention and appreciation. I don't think there was a single nigger in it, at least not in speaking roles, and the only oriental character in it was an arrogant jackass. :D No strong womyn, homo shit or any of the usual crap that modern Hollywood is filled with to the brim.

It's somewhat paradoxal how this felt somehow the most serious of Tarantino's movies, one with an actual message in it, but on the other hand it also felt like the comic emphasis was perhaps stronger here than ever before in his films. It's funny, deep and stylish. There's also this sort of feel of yearning as it's an end of an era story, but I can't stop thinking it was also figuratively about the modern Hollywood, how the time of film auteurs and actual movie stars is over.

And damn, that ending was tight, I'm so glad I didn't read any spoilers. That really was some intense shit!

You Keep Me Hangin' On by Vanilla Fudge is an awesome song and it fit perfectly with the climax both musically and lyrically. "No, you don't really need me. You just keep me hangin' on" seems to reflect in a way both the relationship of Rick & Cliff, and Rick's acting career at the turning point of the Hollywood era. As restrained as the first 2h 20min were I didn't expect such exploitation-level violence in the end, that was so satisfying to see those dirty hippies getting slaughtered. The script was ingeniously drafted, how everything was build up to tie up towards the end, the well-trained dog, the flamethrower, how dangerous Cliff was etc. Top-notch!
Surprisingly good for a post 2000 Tarantino movie. Nearly 10/10

It should have won the Oscar. The rednecks/Trump are right that a foreign film in a foreign language should not have been eligible for anything other than best foreign film.

Could have been worse; they could have given it to propaganda like Bombshell or actually have given Scarlet MacTitties an award for acting.

A film is a film whether it's in English or some other language. The academy is run by a bunch of dumb boomers who care more about melodramatic liberal messaging than filmmaking (take a look at practically any post-1980 academy awards line-up and you'll find tons of bland Oscar bait flicks that prioritize message over everything else), but they're right that any feature-length film should be able to qualify for best picture.

Thanks to Parasite's victory, Bible Black: The Movie is now poised to win every major academy award.

Bocu no Pico would be more to their liking.

Since "fat, bald, ugly guy molesting girls" is basically a mainstay genre I'd be shocked if there weren't dozens like that. The entire idol girl casting thing is likely close enough as well.
