I've heard about KOTOR for years and years, but the Old Republic era just doesn't seem appealing to me as a fan.
It's the same reason I don't read the distant Dune prequels - if it's 1000+ years before the shit I care about... just why?

At least with distant sequels, you can see the after-effects and still get a sense that this is connected to the old material.

KOTOR was a bit silly since it bolted Star Wars onto the always very melee-centric D20 System. Suddenly a lot of people would just bring regular swords to a lightsaber and blaster fight. They even had to make up (unless that shit was already part of the EU) personal force fields to explain why anyone would even use blades and sword staves during a shootout, but it's still silly.

Also the moral choice system can be a bit hilarious, leading to situations like all the Jedi still trusting you to safe everyone despite going "Muahahaha I will kill you all!" every chance you get.

You mean ripping them off from Dune. Personal shields stop high velocity objects and cause an energy feedback to laser rifles, making the shield but also the rifle violently explode. Thus swords and daggers are viable.

Though I seem to recall these shields also come in anti-melee variants. Never actually used them much though, since they were one-use items and I tend to hoard shit like that in RPGs.
