Bringing back a recurring antagonist and making the show all about that shit is what's wrong with TV shows today. Just look at what the fuck they did to Sherlock Holmes.
So all TV should be episodic in nature? No arcs, serialisation?

Back then the show was shot for syndication. There wasn't even a guarantee that the episodes would air in order. In fact, many didn't. Every episode needed to stand on its own such that anyone could watch it without having to have seen the previous one. This didn't lend itself well to recurring characters like that.

Nowadays, everything is long-arc. Remember "To be continued..."? That's not even done anymore since it's just implied with how shows are made now, but I can remember when one episode of a show referenced a previous one and it was a big deal.

No, but it shouldn't be forced garbage either. If it's something like The Wire it makes sense to have it tell a continuous story. Same with Braking Bad or Game of Thrones.
But for a show like Star Trek, which is the promise of new frontiers and new adventures there's a very fine line between a recurring character that makes sense, like Q who can plausibly be anywhere any time, and something really stupid.
You've got recurring enemies in the form of Klingons, Romulans, Borg and so on. That makes much more sense for a military organisation in vast space to keep runnin into than some random fuck.

I'm annoyed by all the serialization nowadays. Not every story needs to be that way. Star Trek was tailor-made as a concept for serialization. Go somewhere, encounter obstacle, overcome obstacle. Really simple premise.

I think Babylon 5 was one of the early shows where every episode was related to the next, but I feel like we didn't see the true cancer start up until The Wire and Dexter came along. Remember Dexter? Long-ass bullshit show where every episode leads from the last and you can't watch any episode on its own.

It's just what you do to cultivate a fanbase of soy. Build up some large plot with mysteries and stuff, so fans and worthless media sites can waste pages upon pages on theorycrafting.

Serialisation has its place when the show is akin to a novel - for example, Breaking Bad isn't episodic in nature, it's a gradual development and benefits from binge watching.

Star Trek, as Discovery has aptly proved, is not a novel. It's extremely episodic, because it's all about discovering new things, both out in the universe and in our nature. It's a wealth of stories, all of which deserve time dedicated to them. Spending a Star Trek series to tell one story about one character as Discovery has done is not in its nature. We'll see how Picard manages, but I've heard it'll be a miniseries, so there's at least that.

Balance is important - it's nice that we have shows daring to tell lengthy, audience-involving stories now, but there's always a place for something that you can reliably tune into without a long "Previously On..."

I think the stream binge attitude has definitely encouraged more serialized shows. If every episode ends on a cliffhanger, you can keep suckers watching. Then again, Lost did that before streaming was a thing.

Oh, Lost was a huge gambit back in the day, not just because of the serialisation, but also the budget and outlandish storyline choices. As I recall, the guy who ultimately greenlit the project was fired and JJ had to actually lie about what they were going to do with the show to get it on the air(which ABC ultimately forgave when it became a success).

You know you have a quality ship interior set if it goes well with 70s porn music.
