Yeah I've never used machines in my life. It was always get on bike, go a couple miles, do push ups, pull ups, hit the bag.

How do you even strengthen your back and core without machines? I need to do that. Don't want to end up like my brother looking at a spinal fusion thing if he fucks up again.

There is a reason why in every gym you go to the machines are rarely used while the free weight area with benches see usually full of people lifting. In terms of functional strength they are garbage, when I stopped using them I looked significantly more buff. They are only useful for additional toning at best, but since they isolate a muscle they are garbage for actually getting strong since in real life you use several muscles at a time for real strength and some of them may never be trained when using machines.

So, due to my medical issues my muscles (everywhere) have suffered a lot. Once I get the proper medication I'm cleared to start working out again but all I have available, for now, are some lowish weight dumbbells.

I'm comfortable enough to do up to 20-30 reps of most exercises with them but I'm just curious what some decent well-rounded routines would encompass. Everything I can find online is just, "it'll make your arms buff," or they're from bodybuilders and would leave me absolutely destroyed if I even did a single set of all of their exercises (and most of them recommend 3 sets).

My dietary limitations are fine so I'm capable of eating fruits, vegetables, poultry/fish, and anything else I'd need to be able to eat as long as it isn't greasy beef or bacon.

I'll give you the regular /fit/ answer, which seems to work for most people, including myself.
Starting Strength is a great book. It's mostly about the holy trinity of barbell bench, squat and deadlift but specifically talks about form, which is the most important thing. Bad form is inefficient and has injury risks, costing you time and injury.

Then there's Scooby. He may be an actual faggot but he knows what the fuck he's talking about. I'll especially highlight his videos about core exercises because that's more often skipped than leg day but much more important. You can do squats with too heavy a weight for the strength of your legs and just embarrassingly bail. But if your core is too weak you'll really fuck your shit up.


Another channel that's really good is Athlean X. He's an actual, successful fitness instructor and ripped every day of the year and specialised in recovery with athletes so he knows a thing or two about workouts that avoid injury and build up from a bad state.

Go search his channel for whatever and you'll find what you're looking for. Only have dumbbells? He's got several videos for complete workouts and specific ones.

As for you only having fairly light dumbbells, that's okay. You can do a lot with those alone. Many bodybuilders prefer to go for light weights but many repetitions. It's important that you're not swinging the weights, though. Lift and lower slowly on curls and even five pounds will give you a mean burn after five 10 reps.

Nutrition and sleep are also important but that basically boils down to avoiding sugar and carbs and going for protein and fat.


The short of it is that in the beginning you can't do much wrong. Treat sugar like it's poison, do the holy trinity of bench, deadlift, squat or the dumbbell equivalent to it and then supplement with whatever you think you need to train on. If you think your shoulders need work, go look something up for that and try it out. It's really a mix and match because nobody but a well-paid personal trainer could go into specifics for what you need.
But I'm sure you'll figure shit out eventually if you read up on some stuff. I can also recommend 8/fit/. They are slow but no nonsense.

I ought to get my shit together and start training too. Thankfully, I've inherited a healthy body(great-grandparents and before were farmers) and I do have a decent diet, but right now, I got a bad case of noodle arms going on.
