I believe animals have feelings. I just don't particularly care when an animal is standing between me and starvation.

Hell, I bet some plants have feelings, after a fashion. But I also don't give a shit.

If we all wanted to cause the least possible suffering, we'd eat insects and only insects. Harvesting all the soylent to make vegan products causes countless deaths of small animals. Often rather intelligent species like rats.

I've been a vegetarian since I was 14. Definitely not starving. If you're sitting on your computer typing this, you're probably not a member of a culture that actually needs to hunt or raise livestock to survive.

I've heard that "animals die when crops are harvested so you might as well kill more of them" trope thrown around quite a bit in my time. For one thing, even if that's true, what do you think livestock eat? Food needs to be grown and harvested to feed them.



But that's a moot point, because the study that argument is based on was flawed from the start. The researchers fitted radio collars to 33 mice. 18 of them were found dead. But only 1 of them was killed by a grain harvester. The rest were killed by predators.

I find it funny that you guys roasted me for wondering if rabbits live in fear because obviously that just means they have to watch out for predators, but never considered the possibility that rats and mice would be able to see and hear a grain harvester coming.

Most male chicks are culled because they're not able to lay eggs. Some of them are placed in a high-speed grinder, others are gassed, suffocated, and electrocuted.

I assume fruits and vegetables result in animal deaths as a result of things like deforestation.

I know my mom will not buy chicken, even as cat food, for that reason. I don't think I'll tell her that it also is connected to egg farming.
In our family we've always eaten little to no meat depending on the person.

But with my cats, I try not to think about it. I just buy them whatever it is they like. They don't have a choice but to eat meat. It's weird though. Some cats will try to eat human food. Like I had this one cat that went ABSOLUTELY NUTS for Pepperidge Farm Snickerdoodle cookies.
