It is probably a bit of both if you replace the latter with having to be political correct. Society has become incredible politicized that it is just driving to the surface what was already there. After all people who work at these companies all have a political opinion.

It stopped going unpunished when there came a severe pushback to social justice. No clue the origin of it but it's funny how not self aware the proponents of it are.

Parents can already get pretty lawyer-happy if their offspring actually fucks up and gets bad grades at school. No imagine them reacting to random assholes who want to destroy their children's lifes for the lulz.
