If you have it, you would know.
Not exaggerating, I'm considering eating a bullet if this doesn't get better soon.

So I've come down with tinnitus and I literally want to kill myself. Incessant ringing/squealing in my left ear.
This happened to me before last year. The specialist wasn't helpful at all and said "it's permanent and there's nothing you can do."

But it actually did subside that time, almost to nothing. But now it's back with a vengeance.
I've been playing YouTube videos like this constantly and does help a lot, but I can't just sit in front of my PC all day.

Primary care physician put in a referral to some different specialists this time that I found online, but not sure if my insurance will cover it, or if I'll be able to see them soon.
I used to have really bad tinnitus when I was a kid. I never found anything that helped with it except to run soft sound in the background, like an air cleaner. It eventually got a lot better and now I don't notice it unless there's no ambient noise at all.

I recommend experimenting with playing constant background noises and seeing if any of those cancel it out. I went to a specialist recently for some shit I've had since I was 12. They put me through a ringer of shitty tests and came back with "well, um, you have this thing that you told us you had during the first visit.... Probably. We've ruled everything else out."

Well, G fucking G, super intelligent specialist team. They even gave me shade when I tried to tell them what my diagnosis was when I showed up for the first visit.

My point is a specialist might not be all that helpful anyway and you may as well try things on your own, since they'll probably tell you to try all that shit ANYway. There are probably some tinnitus help forums you can look up too. If you find an air cleaner that works for your tinnitus and it's small, you can take that shit almost everywhere.

I used Nextdoor to connect with some local people and they recommended me the names of an ENT and audiologist that are supposed to be good and compassionate.

I know there are devices, hearing aids and things that emit tinnitus canceling tones. But I'm hoping I can get them prescribed to me so that insurance has to pay for it and I don't. Because I'm sure it ain't cheap.

Meanwhile, I bought some wireless noise-canceling headphones and I've been playing those YouTube tinnitus treatments through them. But they're bulky and I can't lay down/sleep with them on.

Yeah, I've tried that, but mine doesn't hum at the right frequency to cancel it out. Some devices like my AC even seem to make it worse somehow.

This is kind of dumb, but I worry if running these devices/sounds will harm my cats' hearing somehow. I know they hear on very different frequencies than us. They don't seem to be bothered by it, but I still worry.

If the cats aren't showing any signs of being bothered, they probably aren't.

I would suggest you keep looking up info on air cleaners in context of forums or groups with people who have tinnitus. I'm positive you could find one that works on the right frequency to cancel out your tinnitus. I say this because that's what I did for years.

Don't bitch at me if this is a stupid suggestion but have you thought about getting a portable music player (or maybe you have one lying around) and ripping the audio from these things with youtube-dl?
You might have to carry around a stupid doohickey all day but at least you don't have to sit in front of the computer all the time.

Loudness matters, frequency not so much. The reason why a dog for example react to a dog whistle is not because of the frequency but because it's loud as shit at that frequency. It affect your ears the same, you just don't notice.

The CIA was experimenting with "silencers" for guns that work by swinging at a frequency that would pitch the blast higher than human hearing. That kinda works but the problem was, besides still having to use subsonic ammo and not being any better than regular supressors, that the bang isn't audible as much but it's still just as loud, eventually deafening you.

Point is, the cat may hear other frequencies but what matters is how loud it is at them. If the cat doesn't avoid it like the plague it's fine. For everything else they can blend out noises they know better than people. Just like you don't hear the ticking of your wall clock anymore, they don't hear regular noises they know anymore but can still pick out stuff like a mouse.

I had one and now it's gone missing when I need it most. But you're right, I really should go buy another one.
