Genuine question here: How do you decide which gender to assign non-German nouns or noun phrases like this?

There are no hard and fast rules, though we tend to prefer either the gender of its mother tongue, or the gender of the closest German translation.
German being German however, there probably several cases where a specific gender is used because it sounds nice, or we used the same gender with a noun that sounds similar enough.

Interesting. I figured it was either something like that or "fuck it, just give them all neuter." But neuter in this case would be "mein ganzes," not "ganzer," right? So never mind that, I guess.

Correct.
There is absolutely no rule about those pronouns at all. Because of that, native English speakers tend to almost never master that aspect of German even after years.

It really is "because the wrong one sounds wrong". The same with French. When I had French in school, I found that aspect easy, despite the genders of things being completely different and just as random. You just develop a feel for it.

I suppose that's harder if it's not a concept one grew up with.
So it's "der account", really just because "das" or "die" sounds stupid.

The German Left would probably insist it's "der*die Account*in"
Or "der:die Account:in". Or whatever other gender-thing is the new fad this week.

I haven't seen that used unironically for items, just occupations. It's fucking retarded there as well.
