It's basically some kind of German dialect, one even worse than Bavarian.

Well, Dutch is closer to English than current German and English are to each other.
Afrikaans however is closer to both German and Dutch.
Flat German is closer to English than Dutch.
Friesian is closer to Dutch and Flat German than to either German or English.

Real entangled web of Germanic languages here! In any case, if you can speak two of either, you're likely able to understand the others to varying degree.
Usually better in writing than spoken.

That was my introduction to Frisia. By coincidence later that year I read Batavia's Graveyard and the hero of that story was from Frisia as well.

I should add that just about nobody speaks Friesian today. It's a dead language, just like Irish Gaelic. So that Friesian most likely just spoke Dutch.
