Christianity was an improvement in key ways. Before that, every religion had dietary restrictions and other superstitions. Christianity said you could eat whatever you wanted, as long you stopped being a dick and treated people fairly.
In many places it helped promote business and trade, since instead of killing and looting you could find other moral alternatives and both benefit.
Peasants and kings appreciated it because you could ensure the people would be peaceable and loyal as long as they werent being abused and had some nice things thrown their way occasionally.
Theoretically, all white people were equal, and women were more than just Sharia property.

Most of their worst offenders--even during the Inquisition days--simply wanted you to recant and join. (Most executions happened due to the state, for treason, etc.)
They didn't kill you for being born on the wrong harvest moon or because one of your goats didnt have a smooth even coat.
Even today, the most evangelicals do is fleece your money while extolling the virtues of bombing the A-rabs and smothering gays in concrete.
They dont demand worship or things like priests of old.

Like the Ottoman empire. They would allow you to govern yourselves as you chose, so long as you joined the state religion and were a good goy who didn't make waves.

Most religions are just a form of population management. A way to get everyone in line and acting like a community. I wouldn't say Christianity is much better or worse than the others. Christianity got softer as technology improved and access to knowledge was no longer entirely Church-run. One might call that a form of evolution. Religions adapt to survive or they fade away and are replaced with a new method of community management.
