Collapse of the West (Purge General Thread)
Re: Collapse of the West (Purge General Thread)
MySpace > Facebook.
It was great adding videos to your page or embedding a song that would play automatically. Widgets were great, too. I had one for Ron Paul 2008 before I checked out. Several years later, I logged back in but my entire page had been wiped and I only had Tom as my friend.

We got what I call the Apple Future, where everything is that bland you described.Guest wrote: ↑Mon Oct 26, 2020 2:01 am1986-2006 were probably the best years, with the peak being the middle of the Glorious 90s. A lot of that 90s culture bled into the new millennium, and there was a brief period where MySpace and YouTube were the only social media around and hi-speed internet use was growing but wi-fi wasn't available everywhere and didn't need to be until Apple kickfucked the planet and doomed us all.
Everything is so generic now, and I mean everything. Movies, games, books, technology, building design, literally everything is this boring nondescript bullshit. It's like the corporate democracy version of Soviet brutalism.
We all thought the dystopian future would be kewl like in Johnny Mnemonic and we'd all be badass freedom hackers saving humanity and big-tittied girls. Whimper instead of a bang, I suppose.

I still remember the first time I heard someone make a meme reference outside of the internet. I thought he was just socially awkward (he was literally autistic). Then corporations began referencing bottom of the barrel memes, like doge or advice animals.
I went from being the nerd who was into weird humor to mainstream in a matter of months and it still pisses me off. It's probably one of the only real examples of cultural appropriation in the modern era.

First time I ever used the internet was in 1997 at my uncle's house. It was like stepping into a new world, and I spent a shit-ton of time in an AOL chatroom sperging about Broken Arrow.

Hearing/Seeing memes in pop culture is extra-cringy 'cause memes evolve too fast for scriptwriters to keep up.
Autism attracts more autism. Sooner or later, an internet nobody will attract the exact kind of fans - and detractors - he deserves.

Which is why stuff like South Park or Daily Late Night hosts can get away with it but also end up being super dated and cringeworthy.

My favorite TBBT moment was when they released that "we stand with jussie" cast picture and the toughguy soys are all glaring into the camera with their arms folded.
