Also it gave deranged nutjobs the ability to retreat into their own little society, beyond the grasp of normal society that keept them under the boot for centuries. All the checks and balanced we've established to keep mankind functional are slowly failing as I type this.

It ruined the Internet for sure. Before these big billion-user social media sites came around no one ever whined about cyberbullying, or hate speech, or demanded censorship, or anything like that. Everyone just had their own little communities that got along just fine. There wasn't any ridiculous shit like dragging people before Congress to grill them on their moderation policies.
