Didn't the public also did a huge anti-crazy-house push because movies and such like to portray them as cruel prisons run by sadistic nazis?

Deinstitutionalization was before my time, but I've heard it was the book/movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest that got the shitlibs all shook up. They started spreading the misconception that these lunatics are actually just misunderstood people that are a little quirky. They conned Ronald Reagan into doing it because the Repugs were told that closing the nuthouses would cut taxes.

Reagan paid dearly for this years later after a mentally ill man shot him in an attempted assassination. Last I heard, the bleeding hearts had freed Hinckley into regular society.
