To be fair, I'm not sure why Picard is so tied up with Data's death. I get wanting to honor him by helping his "daughter", but before that, Data was just a guy who did his duty and died for his ship as any Starfleet officer is expected to do.

They were just two of the most notable TNG crew members for normies, so they somehow got flanderized into buddies. I think this shit started with First Contact, where they had some weird love triangle going on with a skinhead waifu that was just a head and a spine, with some chunks of an upper torso.

This sounds a lot like a guro doujin, now that I think about it.

(I know Worf was probably also notable - which is probably why the movies kept making up excuses to have him join the crew long after he was assigned to DS9 - , but they probably don't know how to make him fit with the new STD Klingon design.)

It's the gayest not-gay relationship I've ever seen outside of Nippon. This isn't just a man mourning a lost friend; Picard has dreams about Data that are straight out of a bad romance novel, and when he gets to see Data again, he proclaims his love for him and calls him beautiful.

It's gay as fuck, and utterly baffling since Picard was never super close to Data. They were friends by the end of TNG, but that was it. It seems like Kurtzman and his cronies cooked up this cheap romance to score some brownie points from SJWs who squee over the slightest hint of homosexuality.

I dunno, I don't see it. I agree their relationship is portrayed as far more significant than it was in TNG, but I don't find anything romantic about it. It's probably just a case of absence making the heart grow fonder. After Data died, Picard's dream team crew finally fell apart permanently. And there were moments even in the original show where he did express admiration for Data and his attempts to achieve humanity.
