Directed by a woman. There's your first problem.
Women are capable of directing great films, but only by accident, like Ravenous or American Psycho. In both films, the female director tried to present her own agenda and make a statement (anti-misogyny, pro-vegetarianism), but failed miserably. Like Verhoeven tried to make some anti-fascism statement with Starship Troopers, but ended up making one of the most pro-military Hollywood movie ever. I love it how such messengers of ideology fuck up and end up instead creating something immensely amazing and entertaining contrary to their original vision.

The funny thing about Verhoeven is that he never read the story. He only read a chapter or so and thought it was shit. He needed someone on staff to explain what the story is about. So he wanted to fulfill his own fantasies and instead it blew up in his face.

The Starship Troopers movie wasn't even meant to be a Starship Troopers movie. It started out as a completely unrelated script and someone involved in the production read the script and said 'That sounds like Starship Troopers'. So they bought the rights to the book and cribbed superficial elements.

Imagine spending a billion US dollars to be a loser. Could've watched animu and be one for free.

So another I, Robot and Catwoman. Thankfully a lot better than other movies of this "franchise".

Van Damme was offered the lead in Delta Force 2 and American Ninja 3 but chose Cyborg. Just imagine that alternate timeline.

A timeline where a big black dude got to keep both of his eyes?

Van Damme just keeping it real.

I'm more annoyed that we were going to get a Cyborg 3 with Angelina Jolie but producers didn't think she was as hot as the nobody they replaced her with. Probably wouldn't have been a Hackers, and Liz Hurley would have been Lara Croft in a real movie.

Yeah, he thought Heinlein's original novel was shit. It's common knowledge. That's why everything is a parody and he doesn't even adhere to the book. There's no mechanized infantry at all, just scrubs holding heavy machineguns and trying to go Metal Slug on bug monsters.

I had to deal with a LOT of smug faggots in college who thought Verhoven's Starship Troopers was the height of witty and urbane satire. Heinlein's original novel has caused a ton of butthurt among shitlibs down the years and they saw that film as their chance to put one over on him. Because, y'know, making a shitty movie out of a good book that you paid for the rights to is a great way to prove to a dead guy that what he said didn't bother you at all!

Tobe fair, the book is boring and ass. It's just a bunch of guys talking about libertarianism.

What they hated was that Fascism makes sense to some degrees and that it's in a lot of regards similar to their beloved Communism.
