By the time The Shining was made, he was a comedic actor. Ask anyone to name a Leslie Nielsen film and they'll more likely tell you 'Naked Gun' or 'Airplane' than 'Forbidden Planet' or 'The Poseidon Adventure'

The Shining is one of my Top 10 films. I think Nicholson was terrific in it, and I don't mind that he played a different sort of Jack than the original King version,
