Because a lot of the fandom are under the belief that Mancini drove the series into the ground. He was the director of the movie that took Chucky to direct to video. And after getting some goodwill back with Curse Of Chucky, he made Cult, which is all over the place, and more of a pilot for his new TV show than a coherent movie in its own right.

People just want a foulmouthed killer doll going after kids, and MGM obliged. Plus, now that they know Hamill is involved, even more people will be inclined to ditch Mancini's series in favor of the new, easier to follow continuity.
