It probably also didn't help that he adapted a book whose writer thought making pop-culture references constitutes good writing, as does explaining those references immediately afterwards.

How the hell did you come to watch that garbage? Lost a bet or something?
I didn't know anything about the movie prior to seeing it besides it's directed by Spielberg and I decided to give an old school kino magister a chance. Though I wasn't surprised at all it sucked, the old senile faggot has completely lost what he once had. It is like watching Paul Stanley trying to perform with KISS these days. Sad.
So you missed the meme page of the book where it's literally just a list of shit from the 80's?

Ernest Cline is the epitome of the modern soyboy writer. He might even outdo Cuck Wendig, since while he's not as much of an outspoken shitlib he's an even bigger pussy.

And I'm absolutely certain that he lacks all self-awareness.

It doesn't help that RPO stars that weird young Cyclops from the Jennifer Lawrence X-Women movies.

The problem is Grandpa Spielberg wants to be hip and appeal to young people but his idea of video games are pinball machines and maybe pong, so he thinks just throwing a bunch of CG shit at the screen is what they want, which it is. He stopped being a good director in the '90s, possibly after Jurassic Park because The Lost World is just a bunch of weird action set pieces with a gorgeous young Julianne Moore and a weird action hero Vince Vaughn.

Was he ever really a good director though, or just not terrible? Honestly, Brett Ratner's probably a better director at this point.

Ready Player One is quite possibly Spielberg's worst movie.

I'd say he was a good director but that's generations ago. He's also directed an episode of Columbo.

Like, you talk about what are held conventionally as his 'bad' movies, Hook, 1941, the War of the Worlds remake; and those films are bad, but I could point out at least one attribute of all three that's somewhat ambitious. Ready Player One makes Crystal Skull look oscar-worthy by comparison, which is saying something.

No director in the world, not even a hypothetical perfect one, could've salvaged RPO. That's not the problem. The problem is that Spielberg gives so little of a fuck these days to say yes to it and not even try.
