Re: Books
I dunno about that. In Dune he's pretty much a throwaway character. It does seem more like he originally planned Gurney to play more of an important role but reconsidered.VoiceOfReasonPast wrote: ↑Sun Jan 28, 2018 9:19 amWhat I'm getting from this is that Idaho might be a self-insert or something, and that death matters as much as in DBZ.
Oh absolutely. It might be the one movie I'll watch this year.

Re: Books
I just finished thinking about Dune and I what you guys said and seriously it confuses me, I can't think of anything important Idaho did that couldn't have been done by generic Aestrid soldier #5. I mean that's essentially what he his some generic soldier who just happened to be given a name, it'd have been like if they tried to make the guy Harkonnen promoted to guard captain as a main character, at least we see more of that guy in the first book.

Re: Books
He's totally throwaway. What does he do in Dune?
- Hates Harkonnen because he was a slave to them
- Is loyal to Atreides for saving him
- Trains Paul
- Fancies Jessica Atreides
- Is an exceptional fighter
- Dies
Now what's his personality outside of that? Leader of the watch. Handsome.
Let's look at Gurney Halleck
- Hates Harkonnen because he was a slave for them
- Is loyal to Atreides for saving him
- Trains Paul
- Fancies Jessica Atreides
- Is an exceptional fighter
His personality outside of that? Has an inkvine scar reminding him of the Harkonnens. Is ugly but a war machine. Despite appearance plays the balliset, a complicated instrument, beautifully and sings; He's basically a war bard. Is Paul's closest confidant. Is a masterful war tactician. Has connections to smugglers and is leader of intelligence.
Gurney Halleck is Duncan Idaho in interesting. I found Gurney pretty much thrown to the wayside in Dune Messiah quite odd. He doesn't appear for ages and when he does he's sent off to do some intelligence work that doesn't matter in the end due to the escalation of the happenings.*
Now, I liked that Dune Messiah was basically all the scheming turned to eleven up until the very end. Everything leads up to it and it fits the deconstruction of the hero very, very well.
But in Children of Dune, where he would've been perfect to play a big role in he's almost forgotten.
Edit: *I'm conflating Dune Messiah and Children of Dune a bit here. He's sent away on a task in Children but doesn't appear for ages in both books. He plays more of a role in Messiah, though, and is given even more character. Idaho is mostly a dud for Messiah for me since his behaviour is weird and doesn't pay off until Children.
