There actually was something like that appeared in the movies starting with The Motion Picture.
Is the idea that armor would be useless in ST because of phasers? You think it'd have some merit for other forms of damage.

Pretty much. Though it'd probably be nice to have some form of protection if a Klingon wants to shank you, a hull breach happens or a nearby console explodes again.

You see, the Trekverse only became more progressive somewhere in the TNG era. During TOS and before, they were limited to 1 poc and 1 Asian.
