I thought that the original plan of one season per book was a good pace. A Dance With Dragons came out about the same time as the first season so I imagine he thought he had plenty of time to get out book 6 before they caught up. But like I said fast-forward 8 years and Martin has become Spoony and the showrunners are left writing fanfics to finish the series with.
