In the Red Dwarf universe, the crew's memories are on file and any one of them can be "resurrected" as a hologram if need be (but only one at a time).
When Lister wakes up in the future with the whole crew dead, the computer decides that his annoying boss is the best option to keep Lister sane, based on the fact that they spent the most amount of time together.
It's a running gag that Lister would rather have anyone else, but Rimmer concealed all the other memory chips so he could stick around.

I'd suggest checking out the OG RD. It is not Hitchhikers Guide good but better than anything during or after that era of BBC television.
