Rest in peace. I'm not a fan of his, but I know an amusing story about him. First, a bit of context needs to be established: immediately following the unexpected success of Nirvana, the major record labels were desperate to find the next big alternative rock star, so they signed a ton of weirdo indie acts that otherwise would've never gotten onto a major label. Johnston was one of the weirdest: he was a schizophrenic and his music reflects that.

Anyway, the amusing story is Elektra tried to sign him but he refused because Metallica were on that label and Johnston was convinced that Metallica were possessed by Satan. Johnston then became convinced his manager must also be possessed by Satan since he was so enthusiastic about Elektra's offer. Ultimately, Johnston fired his manager and signed to Atlantic. Unsurprisingly, his major label debut record flopped. He's a bit of odd alternative rock history that shows how clueless and desperate record execs are.
