They hired him because he had yet to acquire his infamous legacy. Also he may have known a guy or two who already worked at Archie's or something. Who knows.

He was also hired during that time the comic had just begun transitioning from Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog style nonsense (they even used some of the characters exclusive to that cartoon) to something resembling the Sonic SatAM cartoon which the comic was supposed to be based on in the first place.
Effectively any story was better than no story, so they kinda just let him do whatever the fuck he wanted with Knuckles.
Which mostly involved Knuckles walking around Angel island talking to himself while his father and grandfathers watched from the shadows.

He hijacked Knuckles because Sega didn't keep a close eye on him like they did Sonic. Since KP could never get an "original" property off the ground he used Knucks to tell his shitty Superman Star Trek fanfiction.
