They want to generate hype - and get attention - by coming up with a kewl new marketing label.
Though I'd say "New 52" is a terrible name for the same reason Nintendo's "New Super Mario Bros. Something Something" naming policy is terrible: Sooner or later it ceases to be "new", doesn't it?

It's not like what you say is untrue about the marketing of the reboots but you gotta remember : we're talking about DiDidio and his stooges here and the man legit thought that Nightwing's best thing ever was getting shot through the skull, losing his memories, becoming a manslut secret agent and calling himself "Rick Grayson" while having Alfred dying because Bane wanted to use him for a savage 80s workout in his new black leotard. The same storyline also included Bane out-keikakuing Aizen, Madara and Light Yagami at the same time as well, while NTR-ing Batman by fucking Catwoman and have her break up during their wedding which prompted Bruce to consider suicide.

Western capeshit is pretty much soap opera shit. The TV and Netflis shows do it for budget constraints, and the comics do it because they're basically fanfics.
