Damn, thanks for going into so much detail. I guess overall, it seems like the anime definitely is superior to the manga. But, as always seems to be the case, the manga does go into more backstory versus the anime. I would have liked for the anime to be as comprehensive as the manga, but I suppose that the anime would have needed another season to do so. I really was disappointed with the pat ending of the anime. Fighting Knives for 2 minutes really doesn't do justice to their relationship. I was really wanting more.

You get a great development of their relationship, I want to call the manga shit but really it just needed a ton of work on it. There is a great story in there which is why no one shits on it too hard but the art needs to be fucking redrawn and it feels like a first draft. It's a shame because it could have, and should have been, great.

I think One Piss is a pretty good formula for these endless shounen series. It's a bunch of stupid adventures with characters the fans recognize and like. Each arc is fairly unconnected from the last. As a franchise, it works well because there's always some new adventure to sell to the fanbase. Sort of like the Simpsons, right? You tune in and watch an adventure with characters you like. That format is great for wringing tardbucks out of fans forever.

Breaking the setting up into islands that are usually a bitch to navigate to and from is also pretty ingenious for shounenshit, since it lets you keep bloating the cast while only ever having to focus on a small batch of them every arc. Most of the new characters you introduce won't even matter afterwards, since they'll just stay on their island.

Bleach on the other hand had a fuckhuge cast, and tiny amount of locations to have them fuck around (some random part of Karakura, the center of Soul Society, or wherever the current bad guys have their evil HQ of evil). Didn't even matter if the location itself is theoretically fuckhuge itself, they'll just stay in the one area that actually matters.

Bleach had potential, but after the first arc they should've kept it slow to develop all the characters. Instead everyone got cool powers which were good for one fight and then Ichigo would somehow save everyone by yelling and bleeding a lot. You could easily also tell by arc three that they were making up combinations aa they went along.

This is extra sad with Ichigo's muggle nakama. The power level arms race got so stupid he had to come up with contrived ways for them to keep up - which usually only ended in blokes like Chad winning 1-2 fights agains some cannon fodder before getting instagibbed by one of the big(ger) guys.

Pretty much all that is garbage about Shounen animu originated with DBZ. That's why Plague of Gripes' rant videos on the subject and hearing him call Toriyama a hack is so therapeutic.

There were at least enough characters to keep it interesting. Goku for example was the main character in DBZ but he only really got to win solo against Frieza.
In the beginning he ends up dying to help as Piccolo kills Raditz (with help of his son).
Then he has Gohan mostly fend off Vegeta as he buys enough time to basically force a draw.
On Namek a lot of the characters get to show off some of their growth.
Frieza doesn't even die--hes only killed when Future Trinks shows up (who has a reason to be strong, as his world us essentially a constant fight for survival). Eventually they are strong enough to take out the Androids, which Vegeta could do if he wasn't so arrogant. Then Goku realizes he cant take on Cell one on one so he comes up with a plan.
Buu involved fusions of characters and a sword and stuff before it ended. GT never happened.
In the recent series, everyone--including Roshi--got to show off what they could do in some way in a battle.
In a nutshell, yes Yamcha and Tien and Choutsu were made kind of useless but that's not bad considering how many characters could still be given moments to shine.


Bleach had promise but it soon (too soon) turned into the Ichigo show. None of the supporting cast could have any moments, or grew in power along with the main character. (This includes Rukia and the captains). Ichigo was the only one to turn into 30 different iterations of the same Spanish words, lose three gallons of blood, and still keep frowning.
The world was also gonna end, in the same way, over and over.
