Tony Jaa is one of those performers who needed a director to team up with, like Kurosawa had with Mifune. Jaa is a physical actor without peer, but many of the films he's starred in were rather shit. It's a problem that plagues many asian martial arts stars. You see it even in the old '70s stuff. Plenty of amazing physical performers are stuck in shit movies. Films like 36th Chamber of Shaolin, Five Deadly Venoms, The Heroic Ones and Avenging Eagle don't come along every day. For every movie like those, a hundred more were made where the archives weren't even kept.

And nowadays, the comparison would be with the standard action movie fare coming out of asia. For every "Hero" or "The Emperor and the Assassin," there's some ten wuxia tv series made for the domestic market that flop even there.

Jaa also can't act, so he needs roles where he can play a largely silent character who takes on the role of the audience insert.

Kung Fu Hustle is too similar to Looney Tunes for my tastes.

Him being Thai doesn't help. The film industry there is backwards as hell and the fact we even got two decent movies out of him is a minor miracle. (People shit on Weinstein for cutting up martial arts movies, but the American cut of The Protector was so much better.)

The Protector 2 has so much wire-fu and weird greenscreen effects, plus lightsaber feet at 5:20!

Sometimes you really have to wonder if the script writer was smoking something.

And that's ok.

(A bit weird how this starts off as an animu fight, but then turns mostly practical halfway through for a bit.)

Movie was total ass even when not expecting anything.

With these names and something even remotely resembling a budget im sure most of us here couldve made a better movie. Hell give them to spoony and we'd have the spoony movie 10 years late

Cage movies are a notoriously mixed bag. Sometimes everything seems right on paper and it's still a stinker.

Is there any juijitsu in it? All I ever see is Cage in his pajamas holding a sword.

Brad Jones said it's based on some comic book.
