obsessed with making a terrible esoteric martial arts porno starring James Coburn.
You make that sound like it was a bad thing.

I've been watching a few kung fu movies. Some are nothing special, but this one and Avenging Eagle both stick in my mind. The Heroic Ones has some impressive sets and a story that goes beyond the typical bad guy revenge. It features an execution scene that would be considered extremely gory even today. The battles are fairly large-scale for this period of films, it has a lot of protagonists (13 sons and the king iirc) and the "heroes" represent the mongols/tartars, which definitely goes against the typecasting of Chinese films. There are some hilarious day-for-night shots, but other than that, I had a great time.

Man, that must've been one hell of a budget with that many extras.

I remember in British Hong Kong, they had three movie rating classifications.
I = G
II = PG/PG-13
III = R/NC-17

With Category III, they could have ultra violence like Riki-Oh and also nudity and sex. Can they even make those kind of movies anymore?

More likely Japanese. I hear a large part of their movie output is historical revisionist films where the CCP totally kicked Japan's ass.
